Dental charges on the Island are to increase from the first of April if Tynwald backs moves by the Department of Health.
Increases for treatment range from 10 to 12% - but the department says it's the first increase in charges for almost five years and point out that inflation on the Island over the same period comes out at 14.3%
In addition to the increase in charges, dental examinations will now cost ?18.50.
Diagnosis, treatment planning and maintenance work will cost the same amount whilst treatment will be ?50.50 and ?219 for the provision of dental appliances.
Health Minister Howard Quayle says the increases are slightly below the rate of inflation and bring the Island in line with charges in England. He says as examinations take up the time of a qualified dentist, it is only appropriate that they attract a charge. However, he points out that charges for NHS examinations generally remain substantially lower than the charge for examinations in the private sector.
Those who are exempt from dental charges, such as children under 16 and those receiving income support or Job Seeker’s Allowance, will continue to receive their examinations and treatment free of charge.
