by isleofman.com 24th December 2013

Yesterday, Monday 23rd December, the Emergency Services Joint Control room received a call from concerned neighbours of a property in Ballahane Close, Port Erin after they heard the domestic smoke detector operating in the next door property.

On arrival the property was checked and smoke seen inside, an entry was forced into the property and the building searched for the fire.  The fire was found under the kitchen floor where the joists and floor boards had been burnt away. The cause of the fire was identified as an electrical fault in the wiring. The flooring had to be removed to ensure that the fire had been fully extinguished. Crews were in attendance for two hours making the property safe.

Damage was confined to just the kitchen thanks to the quick thinking of the neighbours, smoke detectors save lives and also mitigate damage to properties.
