Sometime early in the year 1428, as a result of a letter of complaint made to the Lord of Mann - Sir John Stanley II by an irate and over-zealous Controller of Finances - John Cote, a series of enquests (formal courts of inquiry) was held at Castle Rushen and Peel Castle into alleged lax administration and endemic corruption by high officials stationed at those fortresses. As a result of these courts, eight high officials were condemned as traitors to the Lord of Mann (including ironically the complainant himself).
The various complaints made to Sir John Stanley were very serious and included offences of theft, fraud, robbery, assaults by high officials on castle staff, false imprisonment, torture, wounding, extortion from the clergy and public, poaching the Lord's game and fish, illegal drinking parties and drunkenness on the castle walls and in chambers, neglect of duty, "loose women" being invited into the castle, disaffection of the garrison members, being absent without leave and leaving the castle gates unlocked, plus many other offences.
I have printed a very limited number of copies of my book into these Manx late medieval court records and provided my own interpretation of the character of the real individuals involved. It's as close as you could get to going back in a time machine to the year 1428 to visit our island's Manx forts and the medieval characters therein. This book is fully illustrated (all images are strictly subject to Copyright).
